Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Shrubs (1–)2–3.5 m tall.

Stems: Stems unbranched or few–branched, rounded to angular, pubescent with multicellular hairs or glabrate.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite, borne on upper 3–8 nodes. Those of a pair subequal, symmetrical to somewhat asymmetrical, suborbicular to broadly ovate or broadly cordate, rarely ovate, (6–)10–26(–36) cm long, (6–)9–16(–22) cm wide. Apex long-acuminate. Base truncate or cordate to rarely broadly cuneate. Upper surfaces moderately to densely hirtellous, usually very densely so when young; lower surfaces densely to moderately velvety villous especially along veins, the hairs yellowish brown; often thick, chartaceous to membranous. Margins serrate or dentate, often coarsely so to occasionally subentire. Petioles (2.3–)5–9(–11.3) cm long, shaggy villous, base sometimes clasping the stem or perfoliate. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers 3–7 in usually erect, open, umbelliform cymes arising in the leaf axils, densely shaggy villous throughout, peduncles stout, (20–)35–90 mm long, pedicels 15–50 mm long, bracts foliaceous, elliptic to ovate, distinct or occasionally connate, 10–25 mm long, often deciduous. Flowers bisexual (perfect). Calyx 2–5(6)-lobed, nearly actinomorphic, pale green, narrowly funnelform, erect, 11–20 mm long, cleft 1⁄2–¾ its length, rarely more, usually somewhat irregularly, the lobes narrowly lanceolate to elliptic–lanceolate, venation conspicuous, both surfaces densely villous, sometimes only moderately so, or occasionally inner surface villous only in upper ⅓, apex acute to rarely obtuse, deciduous or persistent in fruit. Corolla usually bilabiate, white to pale green, tube cylindrical, straight or curved, flaring slightly toward mouth, 16–22 mm long, ca. 5–7 mm in diameter medially, sparsely to moderately villous, occasionally glabrate except near base of lobes, upper lip 2-lobed, lower lip 3-lobed, the lobes imbricate in bud, upper lobes rhombic–orbicular, ca. 4–5 mm long, ca. 6–7 mm wide, lower lobes broadly rhombic, ca. 5–7 mm long, ca. 6–7 mm wide. Stamens 5, inserted about halfway up corolla tube, the 2 upper Stamens fertile, others staminodial, +/– with abortive anthers; fertile anthers coherent positioned in throat of corolla tube, dithecal, opening by longitudinal slits or occasionally by apical pores. Ovary superior, oblong–ovoid, 2-carpellate, 1-celled, placentation parietal, placentas 2, ± intruded, rarely joined in center and dividing ovary into 2 cells; ovules numerous, anatropous, glabrous, apex rounded or with a stylar beak; style ca. 5 mm long, glabrous or rarely sparsely puberulent; stigma capitate, 2-lobed, lobes usually elliptic.

Fruit: Fruit a fleshy or firm berry; white; ellipsoid; 1–2 cm long; glabrous; surrounded by the persistent calyx; often tipped by the persistent stylar beak. Seeds unknown.

Ploidy:

Habitat: Occurring in moist; shaded sites in wet and sometimes mesic forest.

Elevation Range: 915–1525 m. (Maui); 370–1220 m. (Hawai'i)
